And once you've bagged all of those, chances are you still have to complete some of up to two mastery challenges per weapon. 100% Completion: Most levels have three bonus objectives to complete, a combat rating that goes up by killing enemies, and numerous collectibles, mods, and secrets to find.I dunno, I like Doom Eternal a lot and if you take out some of the stupider gameplay decisions I think it's a rad as fuck game, but I still find myself longing for Doom 2016 where the story was to the point and I didn't have to watch them try to make Doomguy a Gears of War caveman monster who looks like he got hit too hard on his head as a baby and it pushed his eyes too far apart as if I'm supposed to "care" about these random NPCs. That's ignoring the fact that they basically just made the last boss a bigger less interesting marauder fight and just spawn in adds because they don't know what else to do with it while they give you a hammer that feels really bad to wield. IT wasn't as difficult as part 1, the story was kinda nonsense, it felt way too short, they had an infinity war rip off moment that has no payoffs because we literally don't care about ANYONE else in the universe, and then they're quick to rush to credits. The ideas are "fine" but their execution is all a mess.Īncient Gods 2 was a huge disappointment to me personally. Then DLC 2 had ANOTHER final boss that overstays its welcome and THEN has the audacity to just end the entire story in like 3 minutes. While Doom Eternal has a lot of cool "idea" a majority of them are kinda messy and just.illegible at times. It gave you story of what was going on through Vega and Hayden and then moved on so you could get back to killing.

I think Doom 2016 knew exactly how to ride the line. I beat it in a single sitting, the ending is so abrupt it's like they just ran out of money, and the entire game (including DLCs) feels like if they were going to focus so much on "story" they needed better writers for those moments to really "land." Most of the good lore and info is in Codex Entries, like the son's heart being used for the Icon of Sin and other stuff that comes into play in part 2, and there's "reveals" that are meant to be these big moments but hit with all the impact of a wet sock. They continue the "lets put doom slayer in a small arena, lets put him in poison, lets put him goo, which is "Fine" but the fights were fun enough that I didn't really mind it and I actually didn't hate the last boss fight here.Īncient Gods 2 I don't even know what I got out of it. Lots of ball bustingly difficult arenas, tons of cool shit even if not all of it landed.

"Use this gun, oops you stepped in the purple goo, wait for this guy to light up green," etc are all things that I don't really "Enjoy" but learned to deal with.Īncient Gods 1 is probably the best of the DLCs. Then Eternal goes out of its way constantly to try and nerf you because they can't really think of anything better to vary up the gameplay. Unlike DMC or something where the boss fights have hugely specific telegraphs and rely on mastering of mobility and moves to get the most damage in the least amount of time, DOOM's bosses always feel like a chore to me. Doom (to me) doesn't really work with long drawn out boss fights. When you sit there chipping away at one part it's fine and then it starts ALL OVER AGAIN for a second round, and I was just.bored at that point. In the base game of Eternal you have things like the Marauders that are just a nuisance more than anything, with strange design decisions like "You have to be close but not too close but don't get too far either but also wait for the right moment" which just.isn't "fun" to me? Then the Icon of Sin last boss fight was hands down the worst thing in all of the games and their DLCs. Doom Eternal "Tries a lot of new things" which should be commended when they could have easily have just lather rinse repeated the formula until it died, but doesn't really work for me. The game felt "consistent" and did exactly what it set out to do. I just finished DLC 2 and was hoping there was a thread I could ramble about so I'll go ahead and take this opportunity.Īs a complete package I still vastly prefer Doom 2016.
